Step-by-step Instructions
Step 1: Adding the Base Layer with Mesh
We’re starting with 10-inch black and white plaid mesh for the base. If you’ve never worked with mesh before, don’t worry! This is simple.
How to Attach the Mesh:
- Start with a clean cut on your mesh. This helps keep everything neat.
- Scrunch up the edge and place it into one of the twist ties on the outer ring of your frame. Twist it tight!
- Measure 10-inch poofs, scrunching and securing at each tie around the wreath frame.
- When you get all the way around, cut off any extra mesh and secure it well.
🎯 Tip: If your mesh has a stripe or plaid pattern, it makes it easier to scrunch in a straight line, but don’t stress if it’s not perfect!
Step 2: Adding Mesh Curls for Volume
Now we’re going to add two types of 10-inch mesh curls to really fill out the wreath! We’re using:
✔ Orange with foil stripes
✔ Natural with white stripes
How to Make Mesh Curls:
- Cut each piece to about 20 inches. You’ll need 9 pieces of each color (since we have 18 twist ties).
- Roll in both ends, then scrunch up the middle like a little bow tie.
- Secure one orange and one natural curl into each tie on the wreath.
- Adjust and fluff them as you go so they look nice and full!
🎯 Tip: If your mesh keeps slipping, use a clothespin to hold your rolls while you scrunch the center. Makes it way easier!
Step 3: Adding Ribbon Tails
Alright, now for my favorite part—ribbon tails! Ribbon is what really brings a wreath to life, and today we’re using:
✔ Butterfly print ribbon
✔ Daisy print ribbon
✔ Solid orange ribbon
✔ Yellow polka dot ribbon
How to Add Ribbon:
- Cut 12-inch strips of each ribbon (you’ll need 9 of each design).
- Dovetail the ends by folding the ribbon in half and cutting at an angle.
- Pair them up—we’re doing one butterfly print with polka dots and one daisy print with orange.
- Scrunch in the middle, then tuck them into the twist ties right on top of the mesh.
- Spread the ribbons out in an “X” shape so all four tails are visible.
🎯 Tip: Pick a frame color that blends with your project. If you’re using white ties on a light wreath, you don’t have to worry about hiding them!
Step 4: Fluffing & Adjusting
Now that all our mesh and ribbons are in place, it’s time to fluff everything out so the wreath looks full and even.
Final Touches:
✔ Make sure all your ribbon tails are fluffed and angled out.
✔ Adjust any mesh pieces that need repositioning.
✔ Give everything a little “poof” to add volume.
And y’all—that’s it! This bright and cheerful butterfly wreath is ready to hang!
