Making an incredible wreath starts with the best foundation. Learn how to make a deco mesh wreath base that can hold all the poofs, curls, bows, and decor you could ever want!
Hey y’all – one of the questions that I get all of the time is, “what is your favorite wreath base?” This question is practically impossible to answer because, honestly, I love them all! Just a few of my favorite wreath base options include:
- curl and loop method
- poof and two ruffle method
- minimal fray ruffle
- curls technique
- poof and curls technique
- the 30-inch ruffle
- poof with 1 ruffle
- and many, many more!
The interesting thing about a wreath base though is that they all perform the same exact function! Each base makes a great support base for all of the additional layers that you’re going to add to your wreath.
Since they all perform the same basic function, let’s just focus on one here in this blog: the Poof Method with One Ruffle!

How to Make a Wreath Base with a Poof and One Ruffle
There are so many reasons I like this wreath base. Perhaps the main one is that while it looks incredible, it doesn’t take a master wreath maker to complete it. Plus, this wreath base is insanely versatile—you’ll find yourself using it on all types of projects!

Deco Mesh Base Supplies and Instructions
How to Make a Deco Mesh Wreath Base
Materials
- wreath form I Prefer the premade 15-24″ frames
- 1 21" deco mesh
- 1 10" deco mesh
- cutting mat
- rotary cutter
Instructions
- Start by fluffing out your work form. I prefer to use the pre-made 15-24″ forms. They give me a nice full and quick wreath.
- Fold the frayed edge of your 21″ mesh over and create a little “bubble” this will be the starting part of your wreath and you’ll insert it to any of the twist ties on the top of the work form.
- Now using your cutting mat, pull the mesh out and measure 10″. This will be your first 10″ poof! At the 10″ mark place the mesh into the next twist tie! Continue doing this around the wreath until you’ve completely covered the top ring.
- Next, tightly bundle your mesh and move straight down to the bottom ring. Tie off your mesh into the first twist that you come too.
- Now following the same process as before, move around the bottom ring adding in 10″ poofs.
- Once your complete wreath is covered in 10″ poofs just cut the wreath free from the remaining mesh. You’ll want to cut it short enough so that it doesn’t mess with the shape of your wreath, but not so short that it won’t stay into the twist.
- Now open your 10″ roll of mesh and cut it up into 18″ strips.
- We’re going to add 1 of the 18″ strips into each twist tie on the wreath frame. There’s a trick to it tho! In order to have minimal fraying, curl each of the ends of the cut mesh in and give it just a slight roll. This way the cut mesh is tucked away inside the wreath and has little chance to cause fraying.
- Now your base is completed! You’re ready to start adding in all of the goodies to make your wreath complete!
