Easy Mod Podge Host Gift Tutorial

Step 1: Prep Your Pumpkin

Remove any tags or plastic pieces from your foam pumpkin. If the surface is shiny, give it a light sanding to help the Mod Podge stick better.

Step 2: Apply the Napkin

Separate your napkin layers so you’re only using the printed top layer. Apply a thin coat of Mod Podge to a section of the pumpkin and gently press the napkin onto it. Work in small areas and smooth out wrinkles with your fingers or a plastic wrap sheet to avoid tearing.

Repeat until the entire pumpkin is covered, then let it dry.

Step 3: Seal It

Once your napkin is completely dry, add a top coat of Mod Podge to seal everything in. This will give your host gift a finished look and added durability.

Step 4: Make the Bow

Now it’s time for the fun part—adding a beautiful bow! Here’s how I stacked mine:

  1. Base Layer: Start with two loops of 2.5” royal blue ribbon.
  2. Middle Layers: Add two loops each of the white textured and floral ribbon.
  3. Top Accent: Pop in the striped ribbon and optional curly or filler trim for texture.
  4. Tie It Off: Use a zip tie to secure the bow in the center.
  5. Fluff: Pull and twist each ribbon loop until your bow looks nice and full.

Tip: Curl or angle your ribbon tails for added flair!

Step 5: Attach the Bow

Use hot glue to attach your finished bow to the top of your pumpkin. Hold it in place until the glue sets firmly.

Customization Ideas:

  • Choose napkins that match your host’s holiday décor or personality.
  • Add glitter or metallic accents for an extra pop.
  • Swap the pumpkin for a foam ornament or apple for different seasons!

Materials

  • White foam pumpkin you can find these at most craft stores
  • Holiday or floral-themed napkins
  • Mod Podge
  • Paintbrush or sponge applicator
  • 2.5 ” Royal Blue Satin Ribbon
  • 1.5 ” White Criss-Cross Textured Ribbon
  • 1.5 ” Blue & White Floral Ribbon
  • 1.5 ” Blue & White Striped Ribbon

Instructions

Prep Your Pumpkin:

  • Start with a clean, dry plastic pumpkin. If your pumpkin has a glossy finish, lightly sand it to help the Mod Podge adhere better.

Cut and Separate Napkins:

  • Choose a napkin design that matches your theme. Separate the printed top layer from the rest and cut it into smaller sections for easier placement.

Apply Mod Podge:

  • Brush Mod Podge onto a small section of the pumpkin. Gently press the napkin piece onto the glued area, smoothing it out with your fingers. Repeat until the entire surface is covered.

Seal the Napkins:

  • Once your pumpkin is covered and dry, gently brush a top coat of Mod Podge over the napkin to seal it in place. Let it dry completely.

Make Your Bow:

  • Create a layered bow using 2.5″ satin ribbon, 1.5″ textured ribbon, patterned ribbon, and a fun trim like mesh or lace. Use a pipe cleaner to secure the center.

Attach the Bow:

  • Use hot glue to attach your bow to the top of the pumpkin. Make sure it’s centered and full.

Finishing Touches:

  • Fluff your bow loops and tails, trim ends on a diagonal or dovetail, and make sure everything looks polished.
