If you want a bold Valentine decoration that makes a statement, an oversized Valentine’s bow is the perfect project. In this tutorial, Jordan shows how to create a large Valentine bow using table runners instead of traditional ribbon. This method gives you dramatic size, beautiful texture, and a finished look that works for doors, mantles, displays, and craft shows.

Oversized Valentine bow made with red gingham and heart patterned fabric, styled flat on a white wood background for home decor and craft shows.

How to Make an Oversized Valentine’s Bow

Oversized bows like this are eye catching, easy to customize, and surprisingly simple to make. They are also a great way to create impact without adding florals or heavy embellishments.

Supplies Used

  • Oversized Valentine bow base
  • Two 14 inch by 90 inch table runners
  • Zip ties
  • Hot glue

You can swap table runners based on color, pattern, or season. This technique works for Valentine’s Day, Christmas, fall, or everyday decor.

Step by Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Table Runners

Lay both table runners flat and smooth out any wrinkles. These will act as your ribbon. The length gives you generous loops and tails, which is what makes this bow oversized and dramatic.

If your runners have a front and back, decide which side you want facing out before you begin.

2. Create the First Bow Layer

Fold the first table runner back and forth to create large loops on each side. Keep the loops even in size so the bow looks balanced.

Once you are happy with the shape, secure the center tightly with a zip tie. Do not trim the tails yet.

3. Add the Second Layer

Repeat the same process with the second table runner. This layer adds fullness and dimension to the bow.

Place the second bow layer directly on top of the first and secure both layers together using another zip tie. Pull it tight so the center stays secure.

4. Shape and Fluff the Bow

Begin adjusting each loop, pulling them forward and outward so the bow looks full. Oversized bows need extra fluffing, so take your time shaping the loops.

Trim the tails to your desired length. You can cut them straight, at an angle, or in a V shape for a polished finish.

5. Secure and Finish

Use hot glue to lock the zip ties in place if needed. This is especially helpful if the bow will hang on a door or be transported to a craft show.

Once finished, check that all loops are facing forward and that the bow looks full from every angle.

Where to Use an Oversized Valentine Bow

This oversized bow works beautifully in many spaces:

  • Front doors
  • Mantles and stair railings
  • Craft show displays
  • Valentine photo backdrops
  • Gift wrapping for large items

Because the bow is lightweight, it is easy to hang and move without damaging surfaces.

Why This Bow Style Works

Using table runners instead of ribbon allows you to create a larger bow at a lower cost. The fabric adds softness and movement, and the oversized scale makes the design stand out instantly.

This project is:

  • Beginner friendly
  • Fast to assemble
  • Easy to customize
  • Affordable to reproduce
  • A strong seller for seasonal markets

Designer Tips from Jordan

  • Choose table runners with texture for a more high end look.
  • Keep your loops large and loose for the best visual impact.
  • Neutral patterns work well if you want the bow to transition between seasons.
  • Store oversized bows in large bins or garment bags to keep their shape.
