If you are looking for a front door project that feels festive without being complicated, this swag is perfect for the next patriotic holiday.

In this tutorial, Tammy shows how to build a red, white, and blue swag using deco mesh as the base, layered with floral ribbon, colorful picks, and a 10-inch wooden bear sign as the focal point. The result is a full, finished look that works for Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, or any summer display.

A patriotic swag made with white deco mesh, red and blue silk florals, pinecone picks, and a round wooden bear sign featuring an American flag, finished with a layered red, white, and blue star and floral ribbon bow with long tails, displayed on a white wall.

What is a Patriotic Swag?

A swag is a crescent-shaped or linear arrangement that hangs on a door, wall, or fence without a round frame. It sits flat, ships easily, and tends to have a more relaxed, cascading shape than a traditional wreath. Swags are popular for craft shows because they are quick to make, easy to display, and stand out from round styles.

How to Make a Patriotic Swag

This patriotic version uses deco mesh as the body of the swag, with ribbon and picks added for color and texture, and a wood sign anchored in the center to give it a finished focal point.

Supply List

All supplies in this tutorial are from WSB (April 2026).

  • Blue and white deco mesh (WSB April 2026)
  • Floral ribbon (WSB April 2026)
  • 10-inch wooden bear sign (WSB April 2026)
  • Various red, white, and blue floral picks (WSB April 2026)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Zip ties or floral wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Scissors

Step-By-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Base

Start by cutting or shaping your blue and white deco mesh into your desired swag length. Most swags run between 18 and 24 inches wide. Gather the mesh in the center and secure it with a zip tie or wire to create a full, layered body. Fan the mesh out on both sides to form the cascading shape of the swag.

Step 2: Layer Your Ribbon

Cut lengths of the floral ribbon and loop or gather them into the mesh throughout the swag. Tuck ribbon in at the center and along the sides to add color and pattern. Mixing the ribbon into the mesh rather than placing it on top gives the swag a layered, finished look.

Step 3: Add Your Picks

Take your red, white, and blue floral picks and insert them throughout the swag to fill in gaps and add dimension. Cluster picks near the center and spread a few toward the outer edges to draw the eye through the full design. Vary the heights slightly so the picks do not all sit at the same level.

Step 4: Attach the Wood Bear Sign

Position the 10-inch wooden bear sign in the center of the swag as your focal point. Use hot glue to secure it firmly in place. Make sure the sign is centered and level before the glue sets. The bear sign gives the swag a charming, seasonal personality that works well for patriotic summer decor.

Step 5: Adjust and Fluff

Once all your elements are in place, step back and look at the overall shape. Fluff the mesh, reposition any picks that look crowded, and tuck in any ribbon ends that are visible. The goal is a full, balanced shape with the bear sign clearly visible at the center.

Tips for Making This Patriotic Swag

Use zip ties to control the shape. If your mesh is shifting or the swag feels uneven, add a zip tie at each end to lock the shape in place before adding ribbon and picks.

Layer your ribbon colors. Mixing the floral ribbon with a solid red or white ribbon adds depth. If you have extra ribbon from the floral style, use it in a few spots to break up the pattern.

Hot glue your picks securely. Floral picks can pull out over time if they are only tucked in. A small dab of hot glue at the base of each pick stem will keep everything in place, especially for outdoor display.

Place the sign last. It is easier to build the swag around the space where your sign will go and then attach the sign at the end. This way you can see exactly how much room you have and keep the center clear.

Where to Display This Swag

This patriotic swag works well on:

  • A front door with a hook or wreath hanger
  • A fence or gate post with wire or zip tie attachment
  • A fireplace mantel
  • A craft show display board or backdrop

Because the deco mesh is the base, this swag holds its shape well outdoors and is easy to store flat between seasons.
