Hey y’all, it’s Coach Megan! Today, I’m showing you how to turn a simple piece of greenery into a gorgeous mailbox topper.
Whether you’re decorating for a holiday, birthday, Mother’s Day, or just want to add a little flair to your front yard, this DIY mailbox swag is a fun and easy project to try!

Mailbox Topper Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Prep Your Swag Base
Start with your swag base or a piece of garland. If you’re using a teardrop swag, you can trim it down to create a more even shape. Lay your greenery flat on your workspace.
Step 2: Add Mesh for a Full Base
Now let’s build up that base! Take your yellow mesh and curl in both ends, then fold it in half. Attach it to one end of the swag, then repeat on the other end, meeting in the middle. Secure it using the greenery ties. This creates a balanced foundation for your swag.
Next, repeat the same process with the purple mesh, alternating placement with the yellow mesh for contrast. I like to call this the butt method because it creates cute little “cheeks” of mesh—just a fun little trick!
To add even more dimension, take your 10-inch blue mesh and make cruffles (roll the ends inward, scrunch the middle, and secure it). Use these to fill in any gaps where extra volume is needed.
Step 3: Create a Statement Bow
A mailbox topper isn’t complete without a show-stopping bow! Grab your flower and butterfly ribbon and make three loops, about 7-8 inches each. Then, layer in the blue ribbon with two loops and finish with polka dot and orange ribbon with two loops. Secure the bow with a zip tie and fluff it out.
Attach the bow to the middle of your swag using the greenery ties. This is going to be the centerpiece of your design!
Step 4: Add Ribbon Tails for Extra Flair
Now let’s bring in some ribbon tails on each side. Start by pinching and twisting a piece of ribbon, making one loop and a long tail. Add two loops of the blue ribbon, then a single strip of the polka dot ribbon for contrast. Secure this with a zip tie and attach it under the main bow. Repeat on the other side to keep things balanced.
Trim the ribbon tails at an angle or dovetail them for a polished finish.
Step 5: Add Florals for a Professional Touch
To elevate the design, we’re adding filler floral picks. These come with different textures, so they help add variety and movement. Use hot glue to secure the stems, making sure they touch the mesh, greenery, and even some ribbon.
I placed one floral stem near the center of the bow, one on each side, and one extending from the bottom to mirror the ribbon tails.
Step 6: Attach to Your Mailbox
Your beautiful swag is complete! To attach it to your mailbox, use:
- Zip ties
- Floral wire
- Command Strips
Wrap it securely around your mailbox post so it stays in place and withstands the weather.

Instructions
- Lay your 24” swag base flat on your workspace.
- Curl both ends of 21” yellow mesh, fold in half, and attach to both ends of the swag, meeting in the middle.
- Repeat with 21” purple mesh, alternating placement with the yellow.
- Add 10.25” blue mesh cruffles to fill in gaps.
- Use 2.5” flower and butterfly ribbon to create a bow with three 7-8” loops.
- Add two loops of 1” blue ribbon and two loops of 1.5” yellow polka dot and orange ribbon.
- Secure with a zip tie and attach to the center of the swag.
- Create loops and tails with all three ribbon styles, securing with a zip tie.
- Attach under the main bow, mirroring both sides.
- Trim tails at an angle or dovetail.
- Use filler floral picks, securing them with hot glue.
- Place one in the center of the bow, one on each side, and one extending from the bottom.
- Secure the swag using zip ties, floral wire, or Command Strips.
- Fluff out ribbons, adjust florals, and make sure everything is balanced.
