Burlap wreaths are incredibly versatile, making them perfect for any season or style. Whether you leave it plain, jazz it up with a bow, or add floral picks, this wreath is an excellent foundation for your creative projects.
DIY Simple Burlap Wreath
Hi friends! It’s Coach Stacy from The Makers University Creative Coaching team and today I’m showing you how to create a stunning burlap wreath.
In this tutorial, I’ll share two different methods to create a burlap wreath, along with tips for adding embellishments and bows. Let’s get started!

Materials You’ll Need:
- Wire Wreath Frame: I’m using a Dollar Tree metal frame with four wires.
- Burlap Ribbon: 5-inch loose weave burlap (approximately 45-60 feet). You can also use 4-inch or 6-inch ribbon.
- Zip Ties or Pipe Cleaners: To secure the burlap and bow.
- Scissors: To trim burlap and ribbon.
- Optional Embellishments: Floral picks, glitter stems, or other seasonal decor.
- Bow-Making Supplies: Ribbons in complementary colors and patterns.

Method 1: Scrunch-and-Poof Burlap Technique
This technique creates a classic, textured wreath with evenly sized poofs.
Steps:
- Secure the Burlap: Take the end of your burlap ribbon, scrunch it together, and secure it to the frame with a zip tie at one of the crossbars. Make sure it’s tight so it doesn’t come loose.
- Create Poofs:
- Measure approximately 5 inches of burlap and scrunch it together.
- Feed the burlap through the wire frame, starting between the outer two wires.
- Pull the next poof up through the middle wires.
- Continue alternating between the sections to create a full, even look.
- Work Around the Frame: Repeat the process until you’ve gone all the way around the frame. Keep your poofs uniform for a polished appearance.
- Secure the End: Once you’ve completed the circle, secure the burlap with another zip tie at the back of the frame.
- Fluff the Poofs: After finishing the entire frame, fluff your poofs for a full and textured look.
Method 2: Wrap-and-Bunch Burlap Technique
This method involves wrapping the burlap around the frame for a more streamlined and structured design.
Steps:
- Start Wrapping:
- Secure the end of your burlap to the second wire on the frame using a zip tie.
- Wrap the burlap tightly around the frame, keeping the wire centered in the middle of the ribbon.
- Continue Wrapping:
- Work your way around the frame, pulling the burlap taut to ensure an even look.
- When one roll ends, secure it with a zip tie, and start the next roll in the same spot.
- Add Layers: Repeat the process for each row of the wire frame, working inward from the outer ring to the inner ring.
- Finish and Fluff: Once the frame is fully wrapped, secure the end of the burlap with a zip tie. Fluff and adjust as needed for a polished look.
Adding a Bow
A bow can transform a burlap wreath into a statement piece. Here’s how to create and attach one:
Steps:
- Choose Your Ribbons: Select complementary ribbons, such as burlap, moss green, and a patterned option like linen stripes.
- Make the Bow:
- Use a bow maker or make loops by hand. Start with the largest loops (approximately 5 inches) for the base.
- Add smaller loops in coordinating ribbons for dimension.
- Secure the bow with a zip tie and a pipe cleaner for easy attachment.
- Attach the Bow:
- Find the least attractive spot on your wreath (like where the burlap ends).
- Use the pipe cleaner to secure the bow to a crossbar on the frame.
- Fluff and Adjust: Spread out the bow loops and tails for a full, balanced look.
Optional Embellishments
Take your wreath to the next level with these ideas:
- Floral Picks: Add seasonal flowers for a pop of color.
- Glitter Stems: Perfect for holidays like Christmas or Valentine’s Day.
- Rustic Elements: Incorporate pinecones, berries, or wooden accents for a natural vibe.
Tips for a Stunning Burlap Wreath
- Keep It Neat: Trim frayed edges and tuck in any stray burlap pieces.
- Versatility: Take a photo of the plain burlap base before adding embellishments to show its flexibility for different seasons.
- Save Time: Don’t fluff the burlap until the entire wreath is complete—it’ll save effort and make the process smoother.
