🎀 What is a Bow Backer?

A bow backer is a circular or shaped base designed specifically to anchor bows for wreaths, swags, signs, and more. It gives your design stability while allowing you to layer bows, tails, and embellishments without everything flopping over. It’s a crafter’s secret weapon for bold and structured bow statements.

How to Make a Watermelon Door Hanger

This project is fast, flexible, and a great way to use up ribbon and fabric scraps. Let’s dive in!

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Watermelon Bow Backer (from DecoExchange)
  • Beads (Hobby Lobby – any color or shape you love)
  • Fat Quarters (Walmart – pick prints or solids to match your theme)
  • 2.5″ Red and White Polka Dot Ribbon (DecoExchange)
  • 1.5″ Red and Green Fancy Panty Ribbon (DecoExchange – my all-time fave!)
  • Additional Ribbon (your choice of textures or coordinating colors)
  • Zip ties
  • Hot glue gun (optional for extra hold)

Step-by-step Instructions

Step 1: Prep the Bow Backer

Start by laying out your BowBacker and deciding your color palette. This is your base, so think about how full and layered you want your finished look to be.

Step 2: Add Fabric Strips

Cut your fat quarters into strips and tie or hot glue them around the edges of the BowBacker. Let the strips hang or curl for movement and texture.

🎯 Pro Tip: Mix solid and patterned fabric for contrast. Don’t overthink it—scrappy and playful looks amazing!

Step 3: Build Your Bow

Layer your ribbons from widest to narrowest. Use the red and white polka dot ribbon to create a bold foundation, and top it off with the Fancy Panty ribbon for extra sparkle.

Secure the center with a zip tie and fluff the loops.

Step 4: Attach the Bow

Zip tie or glue your completed bow to the BowBacker. Make sure it’s centered and secure.

Step 5: Add Beads

Cut your beads into short strands and tuck them into the fabric or bow base. Let them dangle freely for extra movement and color.

Step 6: Fluff and Adjust

Fluff out your loops, shape your fabric tails, and adjust the beads until you’re happy with the look. Don’t be afraid to bend and reposition as needed!
