What’s in the post?

Assessing Your Summer Wreath

The first step to transforming your wreath is to carefully examine your current wreath’s base, any elements attached, and color scheme. Ask yourself, “Can it transition into fall?”

Wreath Base

Take a look at the base. Common wreath bases include grapevine, straw, foam, and wire.

Ideally, if you want a more rustic farmhouse style, you’ll need a simple grapevine or straw wreath as they naturally evoke the colors of fall and provide a neutral backdrop for those traditional autumnal elements.

Elements and Colors

Decide what stays and what needs to go. Some elements from your summer wreath may transition seamlessly into your fall wreath. Items like greenery, faux berries, pinecones, and even burlap can lend themselves well to both summer and fall wreaths.

Fall color schemes heavily feature warm hues like oranges, golds, yellows, and deep reds. Nature’s fall accents – think pumpkins, acorns, and riotous fall colors – make any space feel cozier and more inviting. But more about that later.

How to Make a Wreath that Transitions from Summer to Fall

Now comes the fun part. Get ready to unleash your creativity because it’s time to convert a summer wreath into a fall wreath.

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

Remember those pumpkins I mentioned earlier? Go get them.

Look, you don’t have to be a DIY queen or king to pull this off. Some basic supplies that can take any wreath from summer to fabulous fall include floral wire, a hot glue gun (with glue sticks.), wire cutters, and your favorite fall greenery, florals, and ribbon.

When choosing florals and accessories stick to warm fall tones like those previously discussed to give you a cohesive and eye-catching result.

Step 2: Prepare the Base

Give that base a thorough cleaning. I mean it. No one likes a dusty wreath. Now is the time to add that touch of whimsy or farmhouse rustic vibe you have always dreamed of.

Gently remove any summer specific items from the wreath. Perhaps you used seashells or faux lemons. Just be careful to not damage the base.

Step 3: Adding Those Fall Accents

You know what time it is. Get out those hot glue guns, and let’s start layering those accents on that base wreath. Remember, use things like those gorgeous sunflowers you purchased or even those faux berry stems for depth and dimension.

Step 4: Step Back

What’s that? It still feels like it’s missing something? This is the step where you will complete the final look. Walk away for an hour, have a cup of coffee, maybe watch a quick 30 minute show and return to your masterpiece with a fresh perspective. You got this.

Sometimes you may find all you need is a simple ribbon and a great big bow or even a handmade wooden sign right in the center. If you’re looking to add some wow factor, try blending in some unexpected elements like burlap, wooden slices, faux berries, and delicate twigs – the result is a look that’s both rustic and refined.
