Since we don’t have a glitter printer yet for our wreath signs, we asked Coach Dereka how she adds these litter glitter accents around all of these one of a kind signs. We’re going to go over why she does what she does and how she does it.
Adding Glitter to Wreath Attachments
Coach Dereka likes to add glitter for a fun and festive touch. While she doesn’t have anything against using Mod Podge, she found that it just made everything look kind of flat. So, if you’re looking to add some extra sparkle and pizzazz, she recommends using polyurethane clear coat as the best choice.
- Merry Christmas Sign
- Glitter – your choice
- Polyurethane Clear Semi-Gloss
- Polyurethane Spray optional
How to Add Glitter to Your Wreath
First, apply a polyurethane thick layer where you want the glitter. Use a paintbrush to paint on.
Pick which glitter you want. There are many different types. You can choose from flakes, sand, or medium. No limitation to what type of glitter you use.
Next, pour glitter on your painted line. Put a generous amount of glitter all the way along. Don’t be afraid to cake it on there. You will save this glitter so don’t be scared. Give your board a tap to move the glitter around so it gets in all the places.
Once all dried shake off your excess glitter and save it and pour it back into the bottle. Don’t waste your glitter.
Optional step, but highly recommend: Use polyurethane clear spray to seal the glitter, so that it doesn’t flake off easily and it’ll make your glitter accents last longer.
How To Choose Glitter To Add To Your Wreath Sign
Consider the overall look you’re going for. If you want a more subtle look, choose a smaller particle-size glitter. If you want a sparklier look, go for a larger particle-size glitter. Think about the color of your wreath sign. If you want your glitter to really stand out, choose a contrasting color. If you want it to blend in more, choose a similar color.
Next, consider the material of your wreath sign. Some glitters are better suited for certain materials than others. As also your budget should be taken into consideration. Glitter can range in price from very affordable to quite expensive. So be sure to consider how much you’re willing to spend on your project before making your final decision.
Can you Add Glitter Accents to Metal Signs?
You absolutely can! The technique is the same as applying glitter to a wooden sign. Just always make sure to use a polyurethane clear sealing spray once your glitter has fully dried. This will help prevent flaking and will make your accents stay longer.
How do you not make a mess with glitter?
When you add glitter, try to do it over newspaper or lay down either plastic, flexible cutting mat, or oversized paper underneath the project, so that you can collect all the excess glitter. This will help keep your work area clean and minimize the mess.
How to Seal Glitter?
Once you have added your glitter accents, you will want to seal them in with some type of sealant. This will help keep the glitter from coming off and will add an extra layer of protection to your sign. There are a few different sealants that you can use, including:
- Mod Podge
- Glitter sealant spray (typically for fabrics only)
However, when adding glitter accents to signs, we highly recommend using polyurethane clear coat. Polyurethane is a clear sealant that comes in a spray form and it will add an extra layer of protection to your sign, while also making the glitter accents look more vibrant. So be sure to add a few coats of polyurethane clear coat once your glitter has fully dried for the best results.
