Hey y’all, Coach Tammy here from The Makers University coaching team! Today, I’m excited to share some simple methods for making beautiful bows for wreaths.
These are amazing even if you’re decorating packages, mailboxes, light fixtures, or wreaths, these bows are versatile and easy to master. Let’s dive right in!
Simple Ribbon Bows for Wreaths

Why Use Wired Ribbon?
When I first learned to make bows, we didn’t use wired ribbon. However, wired ribbon has become my go-to because it holds its shape perfectly, making your bows look professional and polished every time.
Trust me, once you start using wired ribbon, you’ll never go back!
Supplies Needed
- Wired ribbon (various widths and designs)
- Pipe cleaners (20 inches recommended)
- Zip ties
- Scissors
- Cutting mat or ruler (optional)

Basic Dovetail Technique
Before we start, let’s perfect the dovetail technique. It creates a beautiful “V” shape at the end of your ribbon tails.
- Fold your ribbon in half lengthwise.
- Cut from the folded edge towards the open edges at an angle.
That’s it! Now, let’s get into making some bows.

Easy 6-Layer Stacked Bow

This is one of the easiest and fullest bows you can make using just one ribbon.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Start with a tail: Measure about 8 inches of ribbon and pinch it.
- Make the first loop: Measure a 7-inch loop, pinch and twist.
- Second loop: Make another 7-inch loop, pinch, and twist again.
- Secure first layer: Wrap with a pipe cleaner. Keep it loose.
- Second layer: Repeat the process, but make loops about half an inch smaller.
- Stack and secure: Layer the new loops opposite the first layer and secure with the pipe cleaner.
- Continue stacking: Add four more layers, each with progressively smaller loops (7, 6, 5, 4, and 3 inches).
- Final twist and fluff: After securing the last layer, fluff the loops by pulling them apart and downwards, creating volume.
- Dovetail ends: Trim any uneven tails.
This stacking method ensures a beautifully full and layered bow every time.
All-in-One Hand-Tied Bow

For those who prefer holding the bow in their hand, here’s a quick and easy method:
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Start with a tail: Measure an 8-inch tail.
- First loops: Make two 7-inch loops, pinching and twisting each time.
- Continue loops: Add layers of loops, each set smaller than the last (7, 6, 5, 4 inches).
- Secure: Use a zip tie to secure your bow tightly.
- Fluff: Fluff loops starting from the bottom, moving up, adjusting loops and tails as needed.
This bow is perfect for memorial wreaths or gift bows.
Funky Bow: Quick and Colorful

This bow is foolproof, colorful, and perfect for using ribbon scraps.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Cut multiple ribbons: Cut 6-8 ribbon pieces, each 26-28 inches long.
- Fold in half: Fold each ribbon in half and dovetail the ends.
- Measure loops: From the folded end, measure about 6-7 inches and pinch.
- Twist tails: With the ribbon pinched, twist one tail upward and one downward.
- Stack ribbons: Stack all your pinched ribbons together, alternating directions.
- Secure: Use a pipe cleaner or zip tie to tightly secure the bundle.
- Fluff and adjust: Spread out loops and tails, alternating directions for a fun and full look.
Adding a Pop with Four-Inch Ribbon

Don’t be intimidated by four-inch ribbon; it’s perfect for a standout bow.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Secure first loop: Measure an 8-inch tail, then make an 8-inch loop and twist.
- Second loop: Make another loop of the same size. Secure with a pipe cleaner.
- Add layers: Add a 2.5-inch ribbon on top, slightly smaller loops, and secure.
- Zip tie for security: Once assembled, use a zip tie for extra hold.
- Fluff and enhance: Add a single extra loop behind the bow if needed for fullness.
This bow is great for grapevine wreaths, giving a luxurious, polished look.
Final Fluffing Tips
- Start fluffing from the bottom layer upwards.
