Hey y’all, Parker here with the Makers Mean Business podcast. We’re back with episode seven of our seven-part series, “Navigating Business Challenges: A Maker’s Journey to Resilience.” This time we’re talking about building resilience.

This series has been quite a ride. Usually, I’m super structured with outlines and plans, but this time, I decided to wing it and see where the conversation and my thoughts took us.

It’s been a bit scary, but I think it’s turned out pretty well. If you’ve been enjoying it, please let me know!

Talking About Resilience

Today, I want to wrap up this series by talking about resilience. I could go in many directions with this topic, but I decided to share a more personal approach.

For those who don’t know me well, I’m a huge advocate for therapy, mental fortitude, and emotional intelligence. I sometimes feel unqualified to talk about these complex topics because everyone is different.

But I’m here to share what has worked for me, hoping it might help someone else.

The Struggle with Resilience

I’ve struggled with resilience. It’s a journey, and I still face challenges. I think anyone in business or just living life has had to work through tough times.

Pushing through failures, fighting uphill battles, and figuring out what to do next all require resilience. Persistence and consistency are crucial, but resilience is a key part of the equation.

Learning from Damon Oates

I’ve seen many aspiring business owners and entrepreneurs, and those who succeed are often the ones who can push through almost anything. Damon is a rock when it comes to this—his persistence is something I admire and strive to emulate.

He knows what he wants and refuses to give up, no matter how hard things get.

My Strategy for Tough Times

I want to share my strategy for dealing with tough times. There have been many moments where I felt defeated, ready to quit, and told Damon to fire me or hire someone else.

But my therapist gave me a helpful strategy: pick a date six months in the future and commit to not quitting until then. This helps shift your mindset and forces you to find solutions instead of giving up.

Committing to Persistence

If you’re like me and your gut instinct is to quit when things get hard, try the same method. Add that 6 month mark on your calendar, and renew that promise every six months.

Notice how your mindset and problem-solving skills change during that time. You’ll find that by removing quitting as an option, you’re forced to think through problems and find solutions.
