Hey, y’all! Let’s chat about how to choose the right size wreath for your front door.
A great front door wreath adds important finishing touches to your home- a warm, welcoming ambiance as well as a beautiful dose of curb appeal.
But, not just any wreath will do the job well. Size matters!
A wreath that’s too small will look lost, while a wreath that’s too large may look overwhelming or cluttered.
So, how do you determine the right wreath size for your front door? This guide helps determine wreath sizes that will work for your front entry door!
So, Which Wreath Size Is Best For The Front Door?
Most of our completed wreaths measure 24″ in width. That’s not a coincidence!
I find the 24″ front door wreath to be the perfect size for a standard front door and it’s also the size that most of our customers purchase.
Here’s why.
Standard front doors are typically 3′ wide (which is 36″). A standard 24″ wreath will hang about 14″ from the top of the entry and 6″ from each side of the door.
As you can see in the image below, this placement allows for the wreath to make a stunning visual impact. It also allows the door to be opened and closed as normal with little interference that might hinder the door’s use.
Large Wreath Sizes For Standard Doors
However, if you’re like me, you probably don’t use your front entry often. In that case, the perfect wreath size for your front door is LARGE. Go big or go home, right? 😁
Large wreaths have a dramatic impact and are more easily noticed from the street. When you want to make a big impact on an unused front entry, I recommend using a 36″ wreath. Go ahead – take up the entire width of your door to get that jaw-dropping effect!
There are a couple of downsides to the larger size:
- A 36″ large wreath will cost more to ship.
- Choosing a wreath that is flush with both edges of your door could potentially lead to a damaged item.
While you can’t do anything about the higher shipping cost, you can often slightly arrange bows, branches, etc. to prevent damaging the wreath as long as you don’t use your front entry to enter or leave the house regularly.

How To Determine The Perfect Size Wreath For Front Door
If you want to go with a standard look, follow this rule of thumb. Start by measuring the width of your own front door then subtract 12 inches.
This formula will help you determine what size you need for your door. If you leave approximately 6 inches between the outside of your wreath and the edges of your entry, you’ll get the perfect welcoming look.
A Few More Things to Consider When Purchasing
Color: The wrong wreath color could appear washed out, clash, or just get lost if the color doesn’t coordinate with the front doorway.
Think about it like this: Hanging an all-white winter wreath on your white front door just won’t work.
When choosing a wreath for your front entry, you should also pick a color that compliments or contrasts the entry color.
Style: Match your wreath style to the rest of your home’s decor. The perfect-sized wreath for your front door should also give a hint about your interior decorating style.
Materials: Make sure your wreath is made of materials rated for the great outdoors if you plan to hang your wreath outside.
